Draft: Digital checklist for internal staff

The Digital team are here to support our colleagues when creating digital products at Shelter. In order to ensure any new digital offering is feasible, we ask that you check the following:

1 - Have you informed your Digital Product Manager that you are thinking of building a new webpage or product?

This is still required even if you are expecting to work with an agency or freelancer. Sometimes it might look like using an agency will save time, but it can actually take the Digital team longer to maintain features that haven’t been built to our standards, compared to if we’d been involved from the start. So it’s important we know what work is being done.

2 - Have you reviewed Shelter’s Accessibility Guidance and Best Practices?

If you have a specific question about accessibility or need support, you can contact the UX team via ux@shelter.org.uk.

3 - What user research might need to be done to inform the design? Check Shelter's User Research Best Practice.

If you have any questions or need a demo, please contact the UX team via ux@shelter.org.uk.

4 - Have you considered what long-term value this product will give to Shelter?

Will it need to be reviewed after a certain period of time? What criteria should be set out to help evaluate success at this point?

5 - Have you reviewed Shelter’s brand guidelines?

If you have any questions about our current or future brand guidelines (which we will move to in April 2021) please contact marketing@shelter.org.uk

6 - Have you reviewed Shelter’s UI kit?

Shelter has several workstreams that can impact the building of new digital products. One of these is the migration of our website content onto a new platform, Contentful. As the team are still in the process of migrating content, changing or adding new designs or features now is likely to increase the time it takes for us to migrate.

To help avoid this, we have created a UI kit that allows you to see all our current, commonly used patterns so that they can be reused for your Digital needs. If you have any questions or need a demo, please contact the UX team via ux@shelter.org.uk.

7 - If you are planning on working with an agency or freelancer have you sent them Shelter's Digital checklist for external agencies and freelancers?
