Ethnio - Participant recruitment

Shelter have an account with Ethnio. We currently have a license for two people and the account is linked to their mobile phone number as well as e-mail address so cannot be shared. If you wish to use our Ethnio account then please contact Louise Roddan.

Ethnio is a tool that can be used to recruit, screen, schedule and pay incentives for participants for user research. We use Ethnio when we want to recruit participants IN TASK which means that we want to catch people as they are using specific pages on our website. Ethnio will appear as a pop up on that page and the user can click on the pop up to sign up to participate in research for us.

The Digital Analytics Team can set up the pop up on the page you require for a short, specified period of time (usually a week) and you should request this from him using the Digital Analytics request form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScO8RFpPo7n7awi1NJC-MIh21znfRuUQh3FmWdhf3JTPLhTUw/viewform ) at least 2 weeks before you would like the pop up to go live.

Before you set up your Ethnio screener, the key things to think about are:

  • Which web page(s) do you want to research?

  • What is the profile of participant that you want (for example: housing situation, demographics, web-savviness, device type)? Keep this to only those that are essential to your project as you do not want the screening questionnaire to be long.

  • What research method will you use? When are you available to moderate the research sessions (if moderated)?

If you’re setting up your first screener, have a look at “Tips for setting up a screener using Ethnio” document.

Ethnio also has lots of training materials on their site and you can view previously used Shelter screeners on there too.

If you wish to pay out any incentives, please ensure that you ask permission from Caspar before you do so.
