UX team

How we work

The UX team is split across London, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We meet every week as a community of practice “Design COP”.

Some of our roles are based from offices and some remote. (Our remote colleagues are able to expense user research trips and trips to the office when needed, and are provided with the right equipment just like the rest of the team).

The tools we use regularly are Outlook, Slack, Figma, Miro, LeanKit, HotJar, Userlytics, Ethnio and Google Analytics. We re-use design patterns from our UI-Kit in Figma, and are in the process of creating a public design system. We save work in our team’s sharepoint (and use OneDrive just for personal docs). When creating new folders in sharepoint make sure to duplicate our template folder structure.

Who to collaborate with for Research and Service Design in Shelter England

Our specialist User Researchers and Service Designers all sit within the Services team, which means they are 100% focussed on the Shelter users that need our help most. If you sit within another product team you can still get guidance from our researchers and service designers, but it will be your product’s UX Designer that will help you to carry out the work itself. Digital also has a budget to get in freelance support when needed.

We also have a number of tools and resources available to help support this work, such as Shelter’s Research Guidance. This article on research processes at Shelter might also help explain the process for teams without researchers.

Performing research at Shelter

When performing on-site research make sure you have completed the safe-guarding training, and have planned your work in collaboration with one of our researchers. Make sure to use the User Research Best Practices as a starting point. If your research is more quantitative you might want to work with the data team by logging a request. You can also view ongoing performance reports in the Digital Report Centre and via Shelter’s balanced scorecard.
