Draft: Digital checklist for external agencies and freelancers

Shelter exists to defend the right to a safe home. In order to achieve our business goals and support people, we need to ensure there are no barriers to people joining us. This page lists things to consider about the way we work, and Shelter's requirements throughout the whole product development process.

Planning phase:

Have you reviewed Shelter’s Accessibility Guidance & Best Practices? For questions contact ux@shelter.org.uk.
Have you considered what user research might need to be done to inform the design? Check Shelter's User Research Best Practice. For questions contact ux@shelter.org.uk.
Have you reviewed Shelter’s Brand Guidelines? If you don’t have a copy of these please email marketing@shelter.org.uk (Note: these will be changing from April 2021 when we move to a new brand).
Have you reviewed the components in Shelter’s UI kit? Note: any departure from our standard components may delay our migration to Shelter’s new CMS. For questions, contact ux@shelter.org.uk.
Have you reviewed the Design Foundations and Standard Page Templates in Shelter’s UI kit?

Content Design phase:

Have you made headings and links descriptive?
Have you used simple sentences and bullets?
Does content adhere to Shelter’s house style?
Have you used a logical, linear layout?
Have you avoided inaccessible PDFs?
Have you selected hero images with a minimum height of 500px and a minimum width of 1140px? Have you ensured that all other images are of similar quality?
Have you described images with ALT text?
Have you avoided using images which include text (unless a logo)?
Have you provided a transcript and closed captions for videos?

User Interface/Experience Design phase:

Have you optimised for Shelter’s smallest breakpoint (of 320px)? Learn more about Shelter’s standard grids.
Have you mapped to Shelter’s standard font and font sizes? Learn more about Shelter’s typography.
Have you used Shelter's standard colour palette and made sure all text meets AA minimum colour contrast? Check colour contrasts.
Have you reviewed Shelter’s standard spacing rules?
Have you reviewed Shelter’s guidance for using icons and used our icon set?

Development phase:

Have you structured the page and content with valid and semantic html?
Have you avoided continuous animation that cannot be paused?
Have you optimised for mobile and touch screen?
Have you checked the WCAG Guidance on developing new features?
